                         HOW TO CATCH TARPON

                     How To Catch Big Tarpon

Tarpon Tackle - Use a heavy spinning outfit for Tarpon.  A 4000/5000 series reels and medium heavy  to heavy 7 ft rods loaded with 65 lb power pro line and a 50 to 100 lb mono leader. Fluoro carbon will work in larger lines like 100 lb but does not handle the cuts and abrasions in smaller sizes.

         Tarpon Fishing Strategies That Work

Tarpon Techniques - Tarpon live in saltwater and brackish water.  Tarpon are exhilarating to catch in the shallow waters of the bays, the tidal rivers, in the gulf passes and along the sandy beaches. If you haven't hooked into a large tarpon you haven't been fishing yet. These are very powerful fish and will break off most inexperienced Tarpon fishermen. So much so that the hook up along is prized and brings bragging rights. A lot of fishermen refer to "jumps" as a day's fishing. They might say they jumped 4 tarpon today for instance. The stronger the current usually the better the tarpon fishing. Try fishing for them a night for the best action ever. Tarpon will hit Topwater, Jigs, Rubber Baits, Rubber Worms, live shinners, pinfish, cut baits and jumbo shrimp. Try free lining an artificial shrimp up currentin one of the Gulf passes, a bridge or other tarpon outlet. Let the lure drift with the current and be ready to crank like mad to get the line slack out and set the hook. Tarpon want to see a bait approaching them from up stream and moving with the current just a real live bait would do.

Rubber Baits Also Work For Tarpon

Rubber Baits Fishing -   Many different rubber baits will work for catching big Tarpon. Artificial sardines and pinfish lures catch their share of tarpon. Shrimp imitations lures are probably the best for catching tarpon, next to actual live baits. Try free lining artificial shrimp baits up tide and letting them drift past schooling/rolling tarpon.
